Back to Phuket, Thailand (Tsunami on My Mind)

This young man was running from the second wave. The second wave was much, much more powerful and destructive than the first one.

In 2004 Laura and I were spending Christmas vacationing in Phuket, Thailand. We had no idea what a permanent part of our life this vacation was about to become. We’ve been back to Phuket one other time since the tsunami and we couldn’t walk for more than a few minutes down the street or the beach without talking about the things we saw, heard and felt.

Tomorrow morning we are headed back to Phuket and the memories from 11 years ago are still fresh. Realistically we know how absolutely remote the chances are for another event of this scale are, but we still can’t help but think about the possibility and the “where would we go if we saw the wave coming?“.

As difficult as it is to see the photos I still find them captivating and hypnotic.

At this point the second wave was still coming in. It came in for several minutes taking away just about everything in its path.

After a few hours the waves had receded enough that I could go down to the lower levels of the hotel and look at the damage.

Heading into town it was very clear how destructive the waves were.
