Street Photography with the Ricoh GR and Snap Focus

About the image above: Sitting at a Guatemalan restaurant in the Latin Quarter it looked out the front window and felt like I was sitting in a movie theater watching life played out before me. The camera’s was only metering for the scene outside and returned an even more dramatic effect than what I was imagining.

One of the features I take advantage of the most with the GR is the Snap Focus mode. Snap focus can be preset to a number of distances from 1 meter to ∞ (infinity) in 6 different steps.

  • 1 meter
  • 1.5 meters
  • 2 meters
  • 2.5 meters
  • 5 meters

For the following photos I had the Snap Focus set to 1.5m, which was probably too close for a couple images and too far away for a couple of the images. Regardless of the the mistakes made, here’s what you get on a bright sunny day in Paris.

  1. snap focus, the extra (tiny) bit of thinness, and the retractible lens (i.e., no separate lens cap) are pretty much the only things that have me favoring the GR to the Fuji X70. Worth it or no? I can’t decide!

  2. I can’t decide between GR vs X70- I like that the GR is slightly thinner, no need for a lens cap, reported great ergonomics, and the snap focus. The snap focus would be the biggest factor- is it worth it?

    1. I can’t believe more manufacturers don’t have a snap-focus feature. It has other useful applications, but for street photography it’s unequalled. Another feature that’s often overlooked is the TAv mode. TAv + Auto ISO is a great combo.
